Time for a bit on animation inspiration.
I'm going to occasionally share some of my favourite animations so that those of you that haven't seen them can watch them and to give me an excuse to watch them again, when I'm lacking in motivation I can seek these out to inspire me. Of course please feel free to share a favourite animation of yours!
One of my all time favourite pieces of animation is the Tale of the Three Brothers. This combines my love of animation with my obsession for Harry Potter. I'm sure it is one almost everyone has seen but watch it again! It's shadow puppet style and sepia tone is so beautiful. It's all in the silhouettes! If you haven't seen it I hope you like it as much as I do.

The video I am sharing today is a collection of almost all of the shots I created during my time at iAnimate.net, in the order that I created them (I think). Not all of them because the ones from the beginning in workshop 2...don't need to be seen. I was learning, of course they were going to be crap! Some of the shots I'm showing are still a bit crap because I never finished them but hey, I can laugh at myself! Ha...ha-ha.
Anywho, the reason I have put these shots together is so that I can ask people's opinion on which shots they like and why.

I know the animation isn't amazing in some but I still like the idea behind them. For example in the very first shot, Jose is sneaking into his sisters room to take a look at her diary thinking her room is empty, then his sister reveals herself by closing the door and making him jump. This idea seemed funny initially however it doesn't play as well as I hoped. Maybe I've just watched it too many times? I never finished the animation properly, maybe that's it?

My tutors were obviously brilliant and helped me so much. I wish I could still send them every shot I ever make so I could get their feedback. Learning from them and my class mates was so much fun and I don't feel I can create decent animation without them!

Though, now that it has been a while since I actually did these shots I thought it would be interesting to get a fresh perspective on them.

Animation requires feedback. So please give me yours! Please leave a comment or message me privately if you prefer.

Thanks in advance.

Internship is done and I'm looking for a new opportunity!

In the meantime I've been dabbling in creature animation. The Baboon rig at iAnimate has always seemed like a cool rig to use so I've had a play with it and I'm quite happy with the result so I've added it to my show reel...updated reel can be found in the other tab of the blog^

I recently went to the London ACM SIGGRAPH Tech Talks which had some interesting talks and a great opportunity for networking. Most of the talks were very technical but The Zootropolis: Technology & Effects talk from guys at Disney as a highlight. Would recommend it for any animation nerds like me :)

Well, I've not exactly been doing regular updates like I planned because about two weeks after my first post I got an animation internship which has been keeping me busy.

I did play with the Mr Buttons rig, he is really fun to use. I took Jason Ryan's idea from an iAnimate demo and tried it with Mr Buttons and as I haven't done much cartoony animation I think this is an ok try. Should probably do a polish pass on it at some point

I also had a go at the 11 Second Club competition last month. I worked on it on my weekends and I ran out of time to polish it as much I would have liked. It came 34th out of 205 entries which isn't too bad really, compared to many others that were way better and had great concepts for the quote which mine definitely lacked. Mine is not actually very entertaining to watch so 34th I think is fair. The one that won is beautifully done and I have huge respect for 2D entries when they can do it so well in the shot amount of time.
Next time I'll try and put more time and come up with a better idea. Here's my entry if you want to take a look

So... I'm going to try blogging again.

(I'm not much of a writer so feel free to just watch the videos and ignore my rambling)

I've completed the iAnimate.net feature animation workshops, the best shots can be seen in the show reel I've posted ^ please take a look and let me know what you think!

Whilst I wait for the job offers to start rolling in I'm going to keep doing animation exercises and create new shots which I'll try and post the progress of on here, mostly to stop me from staring at my screen and impatiently refreshing my emails...

Today I've gone back to the basics. One of my great instructors at iAnimate.net recently posted a tutorial to help animators create a walk cycle through space rather than a walk cycle in place. It's been a while since I've done any kind of walk cycle so I thought it would be good to follow her tutorial as a refresher.

Here is the tutorial if anyone else would find it useful:

Here is what I produced after following along:

Next I'm going to try and improve my cartoony style animation with this little guy!
